What is SD and HD Video?

Posted on October 21, 2020 by

Currently, there are several types of resolutions for TV’s, cell phones, and monitors. Knowing this, many companies that have websites in the virtual world are in doubt about how to show themselves to this market that is increasingly demanding in solving. First, it is necessary to make it clear that the resolution of the screen has no relation to the size/dimension of the device (smartphones are there to prove it to us), however, the perception of the image is changed according to its size and distance from the screen.

What are pixels?

Any resolution is defined in pixels, which are small points of light that, when arranged in a Cartesian plane on the screen, give us the definition of the images. In summary, the more pixels, the higher the screen resolution and consequently the image quality.

When we talk about HD, we talk about 1920×1080 columns and lines of pixels respectively. The number of pixels formed within this Cartesian plane is immense. The number of columns and rows is used only to facilitate reading.

What is the difference between HD and SD?

The differentiation between these two concepts, standard definition (Standard Definition) and high definition (High Definition) is in a numerical count, the number of lines on the TV or video screen. Counted below each other, a quantity less than a certain number will indicate that it is a low definition system (SD definition), and a quantity greater than that certain number will indicate that it is a high definition system ( HD).

Down below we are going to dive a little more into the technicals on what makes HD ans SD very different from each other.

What is SD Video?

Standard Definition (SD) resolution

Nomenclature: 480p

Width x height: 640 x 480 pixels or 720 x 480 pixels for widescreen devices. This is the old definition, which is still standard for many TV broadcasts. Old tube ’TVs and monitors use this resolution most of the time, as do many smartphones.

What is HD Video?

HD (High Definition) resolution

Related nomenclatures: 720p

Width x height: 1280 x 720 pixels. This is already a widely used resolution on smartphones around the world and on several televisions. It was used at the beginning of HDTV and is still used by some broadcasters to record and broadcast their programs. It has an image quality far superior to the previous SD standard and still has a wide use for videos promoted on the internet. However, the FullHD definition is already taking its place with the emergence of smartphones and cameras that record in 1920 x 1080 pixels.

We hope that this article has helped you understand the difference between this two formats and how they are better used and what for. The video formats are one thing that is going to keep evolving over the years and what is known as HD now is going to become obsolete in the near future, so, always be on the lookout for the latest video definition technology.
